The Crooked Skulls’ Midnight Sun is a gritty, groove-heavy stoner rock album with plenty of doom, grunge and southern-rock influence thrown into the mix. Released through Electric Desert Records, it’s packed with fuzzy guitars, deep bass, hard-hitting drums and rough-edged vocals that give the whole record a raw, natural feel.

From the driving title track to the heavier cuts like “Bury It” and “Skull Bong,” the band keep things loose, confident and full of character. There’s also a guest appearance from Bob Balch on “Iron Smile,” adding even more weight to an already solid release.

Midnight Sun sounds like the perfect soundtrack to a late night in a smoky bar or a long drive down a dusty back road. Straightforward, heavy and full of groove, it’s a strong example of modern stoner rock done right. 9/10
