The Crooked Skulls - Midnight Sun (Album Review)

The Crooked Skulls come out swinging with their debut album Midnight Sun, delivering a hard-edged take on stoner metal rooted in the spirit of Corrosion of Conformity, Down, and Crowbar, while channeling the desert grit of Kyuss, Black Sabbath, and Fu Manchu. Praised by Outlaws of the Sun for its heavy, powerful, and melodic approach, the album blends fuzz-drenched riffs with a jagged psychedelic edge and a thick, doomed-out atmosphere. Tracks like “Midnight Sun,” “Bury It,” and “Skull Bong” showcase the band’s groove-driven intensity, while cuts such as “Ashes I See” and “Iron Smile” highlight their ability to balance aggression with strong, grounded vocals and memorable songwriting. Featuring a standout guest solo from Bob Balch and mastering from Kent Stump, Midnight Sun is a confident, no-frills debut that proves The Crooked Skulls are fully dialed into their sound and ready to make their mark on the stoner metal scene.
